WHAT IS RESTORATIVE JUSTICE

Restorative justice (RJ) refers to a set of values, principles, and practices in which harm is repaired through processes that bring together all impacted community members. These practices are rooted in ways of being and peacekeeping from Indigenous peoples worldwide. We advance our mission by training Houstonians in restorative Circles. Circles are both a way of being and a structure: participants sit together with nothing between them and pass a talking piece so each person can speak one at a time. They may play games, learn content, share stories, discuss the roots of conflict, or simply connect. Circles are grounded in the shared values of the group and held by norms of respect, autonomy, confidentiality, safety, and shared decision-making. They also include rituals such as a centerpiece, an opening, a mindful moment, check-ins, question rounds, and a meaningful closing.

OUR MOTTO

Over a decade ago at the Academy of Choice in Houston, two students from rival gangs sat across from each other in a restorative justice Circle. As they shared their “stories of self”—honest accounts of family struggles, lack of choices, and the search for belonging—something shifted. They stopped seeing each other as enemies and recognized their shared challenges. By the end of the Circle, they shook hands and talked about “starting a movement” to support their classmates rather than escalate conflict. That moment sparked what is now Restorative Houston—and our motto still guides us: “Let’s Start a Movement.”

OUR LOGO

Restorative Houston’s lotus symbolizes our belief that healing can emerge from even the most difficult conditions. Like a lotus rising through murky water, our work honors the realities of harm while lifting up the possibility of growth, dignity, and renewed connection. The lotus reflects our commitment to survivor‑centered healing, youth leadership, and community accountability — a reminder that restoration is not perfection, but a collective practice of transformation.
